Art meets fashion in the fantastical universe of Emirati designer Maryam Al Selaich, as she rolls out her cosmos-inspired Fall-Winter 2021 Collection that pushes the boundaries of form and function. Titled ‘Citrine’, the line comprises 25 futuristic abayas, cloaks and wraps, which you can discover at a private viewing by appointment.
The collection takes its name from the eponymous stone, which symbolizes self-healing, improvement and positive energy. The designs are inspired by the astrological perception of planets and their symbolism, with each outfit referencing their color associations and meanings. “Since the onset of COVID-19, we’ve been researching a lot about astrology and signs, which have inspired this collection,” says Maryam.
The color palette is informed by planetary colorways, such as pale yellow and warm amber hues that depict Jupiter and reference prosperity and joy. The pieces also incorporate the bright azure blue of Neptune, which symbolizes creation, allusion and being aware, and the cyan color of Uranus that represents innovation and liberation. While the creations in hues such as blue, green, brown and orange embody love, balance, harmony and hope that depict the Earth, Jupiter and Mercury, the ones in monochrome hues of Pluto and Saturn signify regeneration and change.
As a capstone to the local fashion scene, Slouchyz has been celebrated for creating art-clothing hybrids that reflect the brand’s otherworldly flights of imagination. Expect the same forward-looking approach from this collection, as it includes the brand’s signature unconventional cuts, natural draping, fringes, quilting stitches and sculptural silhouettes in fabrics such as French crepe, silk cotton and linen voile.
Each piece boasts intricate techniques such as line and padded stitching, which have been a signature of the brand’s aesthetic sensibilities since 2015. “Among the highlights are the pieces in short sleeves with elastic intricately stitched into the fabric for flexibility and airiness,” explains Maryam. Other hero designs include the outfit in black, beige and blue, which is a modern take on the medieval-era cloak. With its daring cutaways, unique construction and space-age chicness, this collection is truly out of this world.
