In the heart of the golden sands and majestic rock formations of AlUla, where human history stretches back over 200,000 years, we embarked on a media journey that was less of a trip and more of a transcendental experience. Between January 15th and 18th, AlUla transformed into a living museum, seamlessly blending the “Sport of Kings” with contemporary art and the profound depth of Saudi heritage. By: Lea Ghanem

High-Stakes Elegance: Team Defender Triumphs at Desert Polo
The crown jewel of the weekend was the AlUla Desert Polo 2026, held at the prestigious AlFursan Equestrian Village (Mohamed Yousuf Naghi Motors). More than just a sporting event, the tournament was a masterclass in sophistication, further cementing AlUla’s status as a global hub for equestrian excellence.

Under the warm winter sun, elite international players showcased remarkable skill and agility. The finale was a breathtaking showdown that kept the audience on the edge of their seats, as Team Defender (led by Pablo Mac Donough) clinched the title with a narrow 9-8 victory over Team AlUla. Beyond the pitch, the event was a vibrant gala of fashion and gourmet dining, where the elite of society gathered to celebrate sport and style in a setting unlike any other on earth.
Maraya: Melodies Echoing Through the Canyon
The experience reached its crescendo at Maraya, the world’s largest mirrored building located in the serene Ashar Valley. We were treated to a night of pure enchantment as the “Prince of Vocals,” Majid Al Mohandis, filled the desert air with his soul-stirring hits. This was followed by a legendary performance by the iconic composer Omar Khairat, whose timeless compositions resonated against the ancient canyon walls, creating a dialogue between modern music and the echoes of history.

Desert X AlUla 2026: Art Without Boundaries
Our journey took a philosophical turn at the 4th edition of Desert X AlUla. Under the theme “Space Without Borders”—inspired by the visionary spirit of Kahlil Gibran—international and Saudi artists installed monumental works that interact with the desert’s geology. Whether exploring on foot to find a moment of Zen or traversing the dunes in an open-top vintage car, the exhibition invited us to contemplate the “infinite possibilities” of the human spirit and the raw beauty of the landscape.
A Sanctuary of Taste and Hospitality
Our stay at the enchanting Shaden Resort provided a perfect blend of luxury and tranquility amidst the rocks. The culinary journey was equally spectacular, ranging from the authentic Saudi flavors at Towfrya, reflecting the local identity, to the world-class rooftop dining at Maraya Social by Chef Jason Atherton. We also savored the heritage-rich atmosphere at Harrat, nestled within the Banyan Tree resort.

A Soulful Departure
Leaving AlUla is never easy. Walking through the Old Town and the vibrant AlJadidah district, one realizes that this destination is not just about carved tombs and monuments; it is a pulse. It is a place that redefines luxury—not by opulence alone, but by the profound sense of connection to the past and the future. AlUla is a destination that stays with you, leaving a piece of its magic in your soul long after the desert dust has settled.
